We shot Ohla and David’s wedding a few weeks ago in downtown Calgary, they were such a great couple to hang out with in the beautiful Calgary weather. Here’s a little more about themselves and their wedding in their own words.

Tell us about your thoughts leading up to the wedding, did you think about it growing up, did you plan it together? How did it feel to make your choices and marry one another?
We definitely planned it together, although Olha did most of the work. Given the logistics of our respective families it took us quite a while to figure out if we were even going to have a wedding in the first place. Once we knew that a wedding was something we both wanted, having something intimate just felt so right to both of us.As the day unfolded, and everything fell into place, due in no small part to everyone involved, we felt so relieved to have our platform to declare our love for each other. It was everything we had hoped for.

Why did you choose the venues/town you did?
There are parts of Calgary that we both love. David is originally from Calgary so we’ve spent quite a bit of time here. Hotel Arts was presented as an option early on in our search and we just clicked with the Hotel’s Event Coordinator, Brian Brownlee. It didn’t hurt that the Hotel is gorgeous, and we both have a soft spot for downtown.

What was your favourite part of the day?
Our first look before the ceremony! Taking the time to take each other in and be together prior to the ceremony was the right decision. It reminded us that today was our day. The stress of planning and the nervousness of the pending ceremony all washed away as we got to embrace, laugh and joke with each other. We both have you two to thank for putting our minds at ease, joking with us, all while making sure to capture and frame the moments in your awesome pictures..

What were your favourite details and why? (dress, suits, flowers, etc)
David: For me, one detail would have to be the weather that we lucked out with. We knew an early May wedding could very well have some awful weather, but we lucked out. We only had to compete with the wind, and even then, it wasn’t too bad. Another would be her dress and my suit. I felt they complimented each other so well, and the pictures reflected that.

Olha: The flowers!! For me, they made the day (I really love flowers). They accented everything, from providing the perfect backdrop for our ceremony, to bringing a soft romantic ambiance to the reception table. We lucked out with our florist who truly went the extra mile.

Why did you choose us?
A simple Google search brought first brought us to your page. Your portfolio on your site drew both of us in. The pictures were simply amazing, and when we first reached out to you two it was with the hope you could make us both look half as good as other couples you had photographed. From the onset, your incredibly quick responses to our e-mails, your professional yet approachable demeanor and your adaptability to our style of wedding truly sealed the deal. Had we known what both of you were actually like in person, let alone how good our pictures would turn out (seriously, people won’t stop complimenting us on our pictures) we wouldn’t have even considered any other photographers from the onset.

Do you have any wedding advice for couples getting married in the future?
It is your wedding. Do it your way! Big, small, intimate, whatever you want. With that being said, you need to take care when it comes to your vendors. They can, and likely will, save the day for you at some point, and probably without you even knowing it until after the fact, if at all. With that, make sure you have at least two people who you can rely on to take care of little extras for you. While we both thought we had most things under control because our wedding was small, it became glaringly obvious that the friends we had on hand to help us ensured our day was everything we had hoped it would be.
